Switching Over

In April 2008, Caltrans installed new exit signs and gantries along Interstate 580 in east Oakland and in San Leandro. The older gantries were placed just beyond the gore point of an exit. The newer ones were placed just ahead of the exit and are mounted on cantilevered monotubes. This photo, taken at the Grand Avenue exit in San Leandro, shows both old and new structures. In addition, one of the two signs on the new gantry, for the Grand Avenue exit, had not yet been mounted when this photo was taken.
