No Paying at the Pump

Gasoline pumps at the ghost town of Bodie, California

Old-style gravity-fed gasoline pumps accompanied by Shell signs have survived in the ghost mining town of Bodie in Mono County, now maintained as a state park. Gasoline was brought to Bodie from Hawthorne, Nevada or Carson City, Nevada in five-gallon cans. Those cans were subsequently taken apart and used for roofing and siding.
