Green Street Isn't So Green

Ghost-town street scene in Bodie, California

This forlorn scene looks east down Green Street from the present-day approach to the ghost gold-mining town of Bodie, which once boasted a population of more than 10,000 people. It was abandoned after a destructive fire in 1932. It's now maintained in a state of "arrested decay" as a state park. The notable landmark in this picture is the Methodist church on the left. This photo was taken May 21, 2003. You can still see some snow on the nearby hills. A weather reporting station is still active at Bodie, elevation 8,369 feet.
