California maintains the use of shield-shaped ("cutout") markers that all other states have abandoned. It also sometimes marks junctions even at Interstate interchanges, such as this one on I-40 in Needles. Notice the round wooden pole. One might think this is a leftover from earlier times, but the signs appeared relatively new in January 1999.
