San Francisco maintains an extensive system of numbered bike routes along city streets, as shown by these signs at Folsom and the Embarcadero. Unfortunately, bike-riding in the city is still dangerous. The streets are crowded with cars and transit vehicles, and bike-route striping on street surfaces is still relatively rare.
