Two Historic Routes

Historic US 40 in Auburn, California

Two historic highways are commemorated by small markers on their former routes over city streets in Auburn. The Lincoln Highway was the United States' first transcontinental highway, designated in the 1910s. When numbers were used to mark national routes in the 1920s, the Lincoln Highway became US 40, since replaced in California by Interstate 80.

This photograph in the "old town" district of Auburn was taken May 24, 2003.
