Calfornia retains the practice of using cutouts for all highway shields, not just Interstate highway shields, as can be seen at the US Highways Signs and Sights Gallery. Sometimes, it appears, even the construction signs in California are cutouts. A detour for Interstates 80 and 580 on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley was marked with orange cutout shields during part of 1999. Similar orange shields have appeared along Interstate 680 north of the Benicia Bridge during the summer of 2002.
