California's railroad-crossing signs are the same as those elsewhere in the United States, but accompanying signs indicating the number of tracks are somewhat different. Evidently the lower sign is designed to evoke a cutout. It's surprising that California doesn't use one, since it uses cutouts for all its highway shields. This sign assembly marks the tracks crossing Gilman Avenue in Berkeley.
