Just Before It Fell Down

This is probably one of the last maps that was published before the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The H.M. Goushá map (fair use excerpt below) shows freeways that since have been torn down, notably the Embarcadero Freeway. The elimination of the freeway allowed substantial renovation on the Embarcadero itself, as well as the Ferry Building, resulting in one of the great urban boulevards.

In January 2004, work began on the western approach of the Bay Bridge, with part of the bus ramp being torn down, eventually to be replaced by a new, seismically-engineered structure.
