Two Jurisdictions for the Price of One

San Francisco city and county boundary sign on the east span of the Bay Bridge (2012)

You might think that the boundary between San Francisco, a combined city and county, and Alameda County would be closer to Yerba Buena Island, the midpoint of the bridge complex. Not so: the boundary is about midway on the east span. This was a hard photo to get when I was seated in an AC Transit bus in December 2012.

Also note that San Francisco is a combined city and county, the only such governmental unit in California. For example, the governing body is the board of supervisors, which also functions as the city council, and there are separate police and sheriff's departments.
