Western U.S. Highways

US highways in the Western states, shown on the 1936 California official highway map

On the back side of the 1936 official California highway map, a map of the western states displayed all the US routes in those states. The New Mexico section of the map is of particular interest: the next year, 1937, was the year when US 66 was routed away from Santa Fe and went straight through Albuquerque.

In California, you can see that US 101, US 99, and US 395 stretched from both ends of the state. US 99 exists today as California 99; in any event, none of the three routes stretches from one end of the state to another as they did in 1936.
