This is the legend for the 1961 official California highway map. Note that four-lane (or greater) routes were shown, but not in a manner that caused them to stand out on the map. The black "casings" (borders) for the lines were just a little thicker. Proposed highways, in two stages of project development, were also shown. Both regular route markers and legislative route numbers were used. Only legislative route numbers appeared for proposed routes.
