The route map for US 71 from the 1926 Missouri official road map shows the route from the Iowa state line, through St. Joseph and Kansas City, to the Arkansas state line south of Noel in the southwest corner of Missouri. Before 1926, most of the route was State Highway 1. A remnant of State Highway 1 can be seen on the map from Savannah northwest through Andrew, Holt, and Atchison counties.
