Highways meet at the west end of the former Mark Twain bridge (1998)

The highway intersection at the west end of the former Mark Twain bridge probably isn't as lively as it used to be. When this photograph was taken on August 23, 1998, US 36 was the main east-west route through the city, with Business Route 61 and Missouri 79 providing access to the downtown area.

This was also the northern endpoint of Missouri 79, and a part of the "Great River Road" scenic highway along the Mississippi River.

It may have been so busy that the signpost was knocked over a few times!
