Why Missouri 759 Was Built

Missouri 759, the Stockyards Expressway in St. Joseph

Missouri 759 was built in 1960 (originally as Spur US 59) to provide a four-lane route from downtown St. Joseph to the stockyards. The stockyards are still active, and so is Missouri 759.

The city marks the route with street signs in addition to the state route markers. The expressway has been extended southwest of the stockyards to supplemental route U in the southwest corner of St. Joseph. The Missouri 759 designation, though, stops at a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railway spur that crosses the route to go into the stockyards. The rail spur is just south of Lower Lake Road.

Also note the mounting of the street signs directly on the back of the stop sign, instead of on the sign post!
