After a new section of US 71 was opened near Pineville in August 2007, detour signs were needed for Business US 71. Instead of using a Business banner, it appeared that press-on letters were used instead for the business-route designation.
You may notice the trash scattered at the base of the pole. According to David Backlin, those were plastic bags and duct tape that had been used to cover up the sign until the detours and new routes were put into use.
