In 2001, Missouri 96 between the Kansas state line and Missouri 171 near Carl Junction in Jasper County became supplemental route YY. Unlike most supplemental routes, directional banners were retained on the markers. As Scott Maness describes it, "they simply changed the MO 96 sign to YY".

Missouri's action came after Kansas decommissioned its state route of the same number in 1999. According to Richie Kennedy's Kansas Highways, all of Kansas 96 east of Wichita was decommissioned early that year.

Missouri 96 retains its designation east of Carl Junction all the way east to Interstate 44 near Halltown in Lawrence County.
