When this photo was taken in 2012, the Interstate 49 designation for the US 71 freeway between Kansas City and the Arkansas state line had been tentatively approved. But the designation was dependent upon some followup actions by Missouri. So, when erecting 0.2-mile markers with the Interstate emblem, MoDOT turned them so they would appear perpendicular to the roadway.
