In 2004, Missouri 249 was extended northward to Missouri 171 and Business US 71 at Carterville. For the northernmost mile or so, Missouri 249 is concurrent with supplemental route HH, which also ends at 171 and Business Route 171. At this spot, the end of Missouri 249 is marked, but the end of Route HH isn't indicated.
