US 169 in Kansas City

Square and rectangular markers in Kansas City, Mo.

This sign assembly in Kansas City shows both a "wide" rectangular US shield and a square US shield. MoDOT started routinely using the wider shields for three-digit routes in 2000. Along some freeways, however, the wider shields have been in use for years. This sign assembly, at Cookingham Drive in the Nashua neighborhood, used to have two wider shields. Sometime in the six months before I took this photo on March 6, 2003, the square marker on the left replaced the former "wide"-style marker. As a consequence, the whole sign assembly has a somewhat awkwardly asymmetrical look about it.
