Aside from the possibly unfortunate combination of supplemental routes, a careful examination of this sign will show that the Route V marker is covering up a former state route marker along with a "SOUTH" designation. That route was Missouri 571, according to David Backlin. By 1999, Missouri 571 was shortened, with its northern endpoint at Missouri 96 in Carthage, rather than farther north here at US 71.
