Springfield in 1950

Inset map of Springfield, Mo. (1950)

The inset map for Springfield, from the official 1950 Missouri highway map. With Springfield's rapid growth since 1950 have come many changes in routes. Many of the city streets with route designations no longer have them. Missouri 13 through Springfield now runs on the Kansas Expressway, which didn't exist on this map. Kearney Street is now Missouri 744. Sunshine Street has become Missouri 413, but not for its entire length. Glenstone is now Business US 65, with US 65 moving to a freeway on the eastern edge of Springfield. US 60 has moved to the James River Freeway on Springfield's southern edge. US 166 no longer reaches Springfield, but US 160, not on this map, now threads its way along the west and south sides of the city. Missouri 123 no longer has a presence in Springfield, though the former route along Campbell south of Sunshine now carries the US 160 and Missouri 13 designations. And, of course, Interstate 44, which runs along the north side of Springfield, did not exist in 1950.
