Buffalo Thunder at Pojoaque Pueblo

Exit sign from US 84-US 285 at the Pojoaque Pueblo in New Mexico

There are several notable elements in this photo, taken in May 2008 on US 84 and US 285. There's the monotube structure holding up the exit sign for Buffalo Thunder Road at Pojoaque Pueblo. The sign itself is a trailblazer to two Santa Fe County routes. And the bridge over the freeway is a native design, incorporating the native name of the pueblo, Posuwaegeh. The Spanish conquerors rendered the name as "Pojoaque", proving that the Spanish were just as efficient at mangling native names as the English.
