Taking Care of the Southernmost Mile

Adopt-a-highway sign on NM 442 in Mora County

At the southern end of NM 442 at La Cueva, this adopt-a-highway sign hints at the heritage of the Mora County village. The name Gurulé is encountered in some of the earliest history of Spanish settlement in New Mexico. Robert Julyan's The Place Names of New Mexico (University of New Mexico Press, 1998) says that a settlement named Gurulé existed for a time near Albuquerque.
