US 66 in the Southwest

Historic US 66 (Arizona) Historic US 66 (New Mexico)

Far Left: In Winslow, Arizona, there are signs marking the historic route that closely resemble modern US shields. This is the only place along the old US 66 that I have seen a sign of this type.

Near Left: In the Southwest, Interstate 40 follows or parallels the route of US 66. New Mexico uses the brown advisory sign seen in other states to mark the route. This sign is in Gallup along Business Loop 40. Notice the unusual font for the "66" -- definitely not a standard highway-sign font.

These photos were taken in January 1999.
