The main road through the heart of the White Sands National Monument is graded and packed sand. It looks a lot like a snowy landscape after the snowplows have gotten to it, and it can be just as disorienting, hence this sign to show visitors the way out.
This photo was taken in May 2004. The outside temperature at the time was about 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).
