The San Luis Valley is on the other side of the mountain that's in the background in this May 2008 photograph taken on US 285. Proceeding south from this point, US 285 goes through the Poncha Pass into the San Luis Valley, where Monte Vista is one of the major cities.
US 50 heads into Salida, which is just a couple of miles east of Poncha Springs.
