The western (or northern) endpoint of US 96 is on the loop around the east Texas town of Tenaha. This photo looks south from US 59. From this perspective, it's the beginning of US 96. From this point US 96 continues southbound until reaching Port Arthur, where the route ends. Unusually for a modern US route, US 96 is contained entirely within one state. In addition, US 96 is an even-numbered route, which normally indicates that it should be generally oriented in an east-west direction. But US 96 runs mostly along a north-south course.
