In 1998, Missouri 79 and Business Route 36 ended in Hannibal at the west end of the now-demolished Mark Twain Memorial Bridge, the former route of US 36 into Illinois. Since then, the two routes have been extended northwest along Mark Twain Boulevard to end at Interstate 72, where US 36 now runs as well.
A more up-to-date view of this area shows how it appeared in 2000 after the new Mark Twain bridge opened, bringing Interstate 72 across the Mississippi River into Missouri.
