After US 36 was moved to run along the newly constructed Interstate 72 in 2000, Missouri 79 was extended from its former northern endpoint in downtown Hannibal along Mark Twain Boulevard, now redesignated Business US 36, to meet US 36 and Interstate 72 at Haddon Hill Road.
