Taking a Bite out of Signs

Where did the missing pieces go? Based upon the appearance of the advance signs for these exits, it's likely that the upper left corner of the big sign was removed on purpose. If I recall correctly, that corner contained a shield for Interstate 70. But what's the deal with the Admiral Boulevard sign on the right? It looks like a panel was removed from the sign to make it fit on the gantry. Alternatively, the sign could have been damaged by accident (after all, it's an older sign with button reflectors).
