Legend for the 1940 Map

Legend for the official 1940 Missouri highway map

The legend for the official 1940 state highway map indicated that some state highways had not yet been paved or even graveled. There was also a reference to the "300-mile system", most likely an expansion of the supplemental route system. The term "relief road" is also of some interest. Nowadays, the term "bypass" would more likely be used, though New Mexico frequently uses the term "relief route" instead.
