A distinctive building among numerous interesting buildings in downtown Oakland is the former I. Magnin department store, part of the noted San Francisco chain. The green tiles are unusual, as is the gray marble base of the building. It's now in use as an office building. To the far right, you can see part of the facade of the Paramount Theater", just up Broadway from the I. Magnin building. At one time this part of Oakland, known as the Uptown district, was a busy shopping and entertainment district. Fortunately, many of the Art Deco buildings survive. Many have been restored; others (such as the Fox Theater) are being restored.
